TAS: Dam clears first parliamentary hurdle

Enabling legislation for a $30 million irrigation dam in Tasmania's north has clearedits first parliamentary hurdle.

It was passed last night in the state's House of Assembly.

The legislation was introduced by the government after the state's independent planningumpire knocked back the project on economic and environmental grounds.

Backed by Labor and the Liberals, it will go before the Legislative Council next week.

The final say on the Meander Dam project rests with the federal environment department,Environment Australia, which is expected to reach a decision by mid-June.

Tasmanian Greens Leader PEG PUTT, who voted against the legislation, says it createsa dangerous precedent.

She says the Greens believe the project poses a particular danger to the threatenedmarsupial the spotted-tail quoll.
