Fed: NRA backs continued use of atrazine

Australia's farm chemical watchdog is backing the continued agricultural use of a herbicidethat's been linked to cancer.

The National Registration Authority says it's review has found that if atrazine isused correctly, there are no toxicological concerns for users or the community.

It's proposing labelling changes, which it says will help minimise possible contaminationof ground and surface water.

Atrazine is used by the forestry and cropping industries to control broadleafed weeds.

In United States studies, smallscale exposure to the chemical has been found to causehealth problems, including cancer, cardiovascular damage, muscle and eye degeneration.

The Registration Authority is now taking public comments on the review before makinga final decision on atrazine.

In Australia, use of atrazine on golf courses, in irrigation channels and drains, industrialpremises and roadsides is banned because of the health concerns.
