FED:Malaysia child transfer evil: Hockey
SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - The federal government is compounding an evil by sending unaccompanied
child asylum seekers to Malaysia, opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has said there will be no exceptions for any unaccompanied
minors who arrive in Australian territories, who will all be transferred to Malaysia under
the government's people swap deal.
But Mr Hockey says any child sent alone to Australia by their parents should not be transferred.
"The bottom line is, if a parent engages in an act of bastardry towards their child,
we can't then make the situation worse for that child and go and dump that child in a
third country without having any oversight," Mr Hockey told the Seven Network on Friday.
"I'm sorry, one evil should not be compounded by another evil by a government.
"I understand exactly where the government is coming from ... but ultimately we've
got to put the kids first here."
Mr Hockey raised concerns that there was no formal education process for child asylum
seekers in Malaysia and only one hospital serving 93,000 refugees.
It comes as the first 55 asylum seekers to be transferred to Malaysia were told of
their fate on Thursday.
The group reportedly includes 19 children, 14 of whom are unaccompanied.
Mr Bowen says pre-transfer vetting, including initial health, security, vulnerability
assessments had begun.
Federal Labor frontbencher Tony Burke defended the policy on Friday.
"Let's just not lose sight of the fact that in this trade people drown on the way here,"
Mr Burke told the Seven Network.
"And we can't change the reality that if you put some sort of incentive in that encourages
people to put children on (boats), then you will end up with children face-down in the
water."

SA:Marathon to get new exploration licence
ADELAIDE, Dec 20 AAP - The South Australian government will renew a controversial uranium
exploration licence in the state's Flinders Ranges for a year.
Acting Mineral Resources Minister Jack Snelling said exploration company Marathon Resources
had been advised that the move would also be subject to stricter operating conditions.
Marathon had asked for a two-year licence after suspending operations in the region
last year when it was found to have improperly disposed of waste in the area.
Mr Snelling said Marathon has been advised the government was considering a range of
possible conservation options which might exclude or limit mining in the environmentally
sensitive areas of the ranges including Arkaroola.
He said the Northern Flinders Ranges had long been recognised as an area of unique
scenic beauty as well as being identified as having high prospectivity for copper, gold,
uranium and other metals.
"The government is currently looking closely at all options for the future management
of the Arkaroola region and will be considering all of available options to preserve its
iconic landscapes, biodiversity, cultural, wilderness, scientific and tourism values,"
the minister said.
While welcoming the tighter restrictions on Marathon, the Australian Democrats criticised
the timing of the announcement, coming so close to Christmas and after months of delay.
"We are pleased with the comments of the Acting Minister which give some hope that
ultimately Marathon Resources will not be given a licence to mine," spokeswoman Jeanie
Walker said.
"But how many times will South Australians be strung out for months waiting for an
announcement, only to find that the government caves in to the mining industry?"

FED: Aussie farmers turn into nomads to cope with climate change
CANBERRA, Aug 20 AAP - Australian farmers are turning into nomads to cope with climate
change and its effect on the world's deserts and pasture lands, researchers say.
And scientists are predicting an even greater shift as global warming continues to
heat the earth.
Researchers from the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre say farmers around
the world, including Australia, have been forced to revert to the ancient art of nomadic
grazing.
Climate change has sped up instances of overgrazing, prompting pastoralists to travel
hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres away for more suitable grazing, CSIRO's Ryan
McAllister said.
"This is a form of nomadism that is good for the stock and good for the landscape," he said.
"But in many countries, sadly, the trend is still the other way, towards fragmenting
(land), which creates economic pressure to overgraze the dry country."
Dr McAllister says he believes more should be done to accommodate the increasingly
nomadic lifestyles of Australia's farmers to preserve the health of the land.
"We need a new system which enables nomads to enjoy the benefits of a settled community,
while at the same time being able to keep their livestock on the move to avoid overgrazing,
and to manage the arid country so it can flourish again," he said.
"It needs to be encouraged, along with those (measures) that allow ... the pastoralist
to store money or conserve fodder in the good times for use in the bad."
It means farmers could also end up contributing to the climate change challenge.
"If nomadism is done properly, the country recovers," he said.
"It flourishes and that allows more carbon to be stored in the soils.

WA: More people may have been trapped in fire that killed three
By Liza Kappelle and Nicolas Perpitch
PERTH, Dec 31 AAP - Three men died and another was injured when an inferno engulfed
their truck convoy in the West Australian Goldfields after they were told it was safe
to drive through a bushfire.
Police found their bodies in two of three burnt-out trucks amid a one kilometre stretch
of blackened trailers, melted aluminium and twisted metal on the Great Eastern Highway
between Southern Cross and Coolgardie about midnight.
They were among up to 15 trucks allowed through a roadblock at 8pm (WDT) yesterday
even though a potentially dangerous weather change was expected at 9pm (WDT).
Some trucks made it through to Southern Cross, where one man is believed to have been
treated for burns.
Seven others unhooked their trailers when the fire struck 75 km east of Southern Cross
and fled back to Coolgardie in their prime movers.
Deputy Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said police believed all people involved had
been accounted for.
The families of the three men, believed to be from WA, were being notified, he said.
The highway, the main conduit for trucks between WA and the rest of Australia, had
been blocked on and off all throughout yesterday because of the wildfire in a section
of Boorabbin National Park.
Traffic was only allowed through in convoys under police or Department of Environment
and Conservation (DEC) escort.
But at 8pm (WDT) the road was opened, the waiting trucks rolled west and three became
trapped when the earlier than expected weather change turned the fire towards them.
The wreckage was very distressing, a Seven Network reporter told Southern Cross Broadcasting
from a helicopter above the site.
"You can really see the ferocity of this fire has come through ... the people stuck
in their vehicles obviously had no chance," he said.
"It is an absolute scene of devastation.
"It's blackened scrub ... there's melted aluminium sitting on the road."
WA Premier Alan Carpenter said it was too early to say who was to blame, with details
still sketchy about the chain of events.
Police are investigating for the state coroner, who will decide whether or not to hold
an inquest into the loss of life.
"I can't imagine a worse circumstance to befall people," Mr Carpenter said.
"Three people have lost their lives, another man is injured, it is an unbelievable
circumstance that we have been confronted with, people must be grieving terribly."
DEC director general Keiran McNamara said the experienced fire incident controller
was very distressed about his decision to open the road, a call he made some time before
8pm after consultation with other agencies.
Truck driver John Savage said he was lucky to get through.
"The heat was so unbelievable," Mr Savage told the ABC.
The road remained closed today as firefighters continued to battle the blaze which
has destroyed more than 10,000 hectares since Friday, downing powerlines and threatening
the water pipeline.
Lee Lewis, manager of the Caltex Southern Cross roadhouse, said the mood of the town
is very sombre.
"Most people coming in are subdued," Mr Lewis said earlier today.
"The wind was crazy yesterday and last night, it was very gusty, blowing a gale. It
can quickly change direction on people."
Trucks bound interstate were banking up in Southern Cross or turning back to Perth, he said.

Fed: Prickly wool soon to be a thing of the past: researchers
By Peter Veness
CANBERRA, Aug 22 AAP - Don't like the itch of your woollen jumper? Don't worry, help
is on the way.
Researchers today said they were working on a "prickle test" for wool.
Paul Swan is leading the research which is being done through the Cooperative Research
Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation.
"This is all about guaranteeing quality," Dr Swan said.
"We aim to have a simple measuring technology in place within two years to test wool prickle.
"Given that comfort is the most important thing consumers look for when buying a garment,
we need to be able to provide a guaranteed comfort level."
The researchers also hope to soften and whiten wool, opening the way for it to be sold
outside the colder months and possibly in tropical markets.
"Approximately 90 per cent of all wool clothing imports occur in the autumn/winter
period in the northern hemisphere in a relatively small number of mature, well-established
markets," Dr Swan said.
"In these markets, retailers generally take wool off the shelves at the end of winter
with wool not even on the radar screen in the spring and summer seasons."
Dr Swan highlighted the potential of India and China as markets for Australian wool.
"On present growth rates, the average disposable income and consumer buying power in
China and India will double in the next decade representing an additional $US16 trillion
($A19.99 trillion) in personal income," Dr Swan said.
"These markets are becoming increasingly sophisticated by western standards with similar
garment preferences to western consumers.
"We need to position wool for these new markets."

WA: Lack of electricity to deadly house fire sparks suspicion
By Vincent Morello
SYDNEY, April 7 AAP - A house fire has killed a family of three in Perth while former
basketball star Luc Longley's home was destroyed in a separate fire near the city.
The fire which killed a mother and her two young sons was in a house without electrical
power, causing fire investigators to question whether candles were being used for lighting.
The blaze engulfed the home about 9pm (AWST) yesterday in Finnerty Street in the suburb
of Karrinyup.
A 49-year-old woman and her sons, aged 8 and 12, were killed and burned beyond immediate
recognition, a WA Police spokesman said.
The police arson squad has begun a forensic investigation and is treating the cause
of the fire as suspicious.
Investigators are still determining if the house had a gas connection and if it was
supplying gas to any indoor appliances.
They have yet to rule out if candles were being used indoors for lighting as they sift
through the destruction.
"It's a slow process and we're going through it step by step," said WA Police arson
squad investigator Gary Williams.
At a separate blaze this morning at Fremantle, Longley's $2 million home was destroyed
but some of his memorabilia was saved, fire investigators say.
Longley helped his partner, his two children and their two friends escape from the
$2 million family home before it went up in flames.
It started about 3am today at the Montreal Street home, a Fire and Emergency Services
Association (FESA) spokesman said.
The converted industrial premises was well alight by the time fire crews arrived but
all five occupants escaped without injury.
The sports star is being hailed as a hero, but is believed to have lost some of his
sporting memorabilia.
Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to an adjacent garage which housed
up to five of Longley's vehicles, but the home was left gutted.
Ironically, the family moved a number of boxes into the garage yesterday which contained
some items from his basketball career.
But it is unknown whether the fire destroyed the three championship rings he won while
playing in the US National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Chicago Bulls during the
1990s, the FESA spokesman said.
Investigators have yet to determine a cause of the fire but are not treating it as suspicious.
The 218cm-tall former star spent 10 years playing for a number of basketball teams
in the NBA and also played for the Australian Boomers team.

NSW: Jihad does not equate with holy war: Muslim spokesman
SYDNEY, Aug 28 AAP - The Arabic word jihad does not solely equate with holy war and
the rise of Osama bin Laden has caused widespread misuse of the term, a Muslim cultural
spokesman has told a seminar.
More than 500 people gathered at the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque in Sydney today to hear
a series of lectures on the teachings of Islam during the mosque's annual open day.
Ahmet Keskin, director of Affinity Intercultural Foundation, a cultural group which
provides seminars and education on Islam, today told a group of about 30 people the word
jihad had been "misused and misunderstood".
"Jihad really means to strive or struggle - it does not equate to holy war," Mr Keskin said.
"It (the misconception) may have unfortunately made people apprehensive of the word."
The word jihad is used in a much broader context, such as a mother's struggle to bring
up her child in the best way possible, he said.
But al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden had used the word jihad in a more global
and political context, Mr Keskin said.
"Osama bin Laden is not my leader and his understanding of jihad is really outside
the context of true Islam," he said.
"He may have his agenda but the overwhelming majority of Muslims including this mosque,
condemns his acts in the name of Islam."
The Affinity Intercultural Foundation will hold an anti terror summit at Sydney's Seymour
Theatre Centre on September 11.

Keane Signs Definitive Merger Agreement to Acquire SignalTree Solutions; Acquisition Expected to Strengthen Keane's Application Outsourcing Practice By Adding Two Offshore Development Centers.
BOSTON -- Keane, Inc. today announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire SignalTree Solutions Holding, Inc., a privately-held, U.S.-based corporation with two software development facilities in India and additional operations in the United States. Approximately 400 of SignalTree's 750 employees are located in India. Under the terms of the merger agreement, Keane will pay cash for all of SignalTree's outstanding stock. The enterprise value of the transaction is approximately $62 million, or 1.2 times SignalTree's 2001 revenues, which were approximately $50 million. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is anticipated to close during the First Quarter of 2002. The transaction is expected to be neutral to Keane's 2002 earnings and accretive in 2003.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19991110/KEANELOGO )
"Many of our customers have expressed a desire to capitalize on the economic and quality advantages of offshore delivery in their applications portfolio strategies," explained Brian Keane, president and CEO of Keane. "At the same time, however, they are indicating a strong preference to gain access to offshore capabilities through a local IT partner to lower risk and maximize flexibility. With the addition of SignalTree, Keane's customers can now move work offshore at their own pace, while maintaining the option to transfer work back to a local delivery solution."
"The addition of SignalTree's proven offshore capabilities and world-class processes will greatly enhance Keane's value proposition and the leadership position of our application outsourcing solution," Brian Keane went on to explain. "We can now offer customers the flexibility and economic advantage of a seamless client service model, which includes on-site, off-site, near-shore, and offshore delivery, with consistent processes, management disciplines and metrics."
"SignalTree is an established firm with world-class quality processes and a strong track record of servicing U.S. customers," stated Russ Cappellino, SignalTree's chairman and CEO. "We are excited about the prospect of combining our capabilities and offshore facilities with Keane's customer base, strong network of branch offices and industry-leading ADM Outsourcing solution."
Headquartered in Irvine, California, SignalTree has been providing application development and management services to U.S. and European customers since 1982, servicing clients from two large technology centers in Delhi and Hyderabad, as well as operations in the United States. SignalTree is noted for its world-class processes and metrics. Both facilities in India are independently evaluated at Level 5 on the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM). In addition, the facilities are certified as meeting ISO 9001 standards. Richard Knudson, president of Global Systems Technology, Inc., the agency that conducted SignalTree's SEI assessment, recently noted in InfoTech Trends that, "SignalTree has implemented one of the most comprehensive statistical process management methodologies that I have seen during my assessment of over 20 organizations in four years."
"Keane has already built a seamless client servicing model, which includes delivery from our successful near-shore facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia," said John Leahy, Keane's senior vice president of finance and CFO. "SignalTree is simply an extension of our existing model to include an offshore component. We believe that offering clients a broader range of delivery options will, over time, result in enhanced market share and improved operating margins."
Keane will host a conference call on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. (EST) to discuss the Company's Fourth Quarter earnings results and details related to this acquisition. Interested parties may access the call via the Internet at http://www.keane.com/ or may dial 212-676-5262 and ask for the Keane call. No advanced registration is required to participate. "While outsider intrusion is and continues to be a growing concern, studies reveal that inside attacks are frequent and can be very destructive in terms of lost data, time and money. The Intranet enhancement to TruSecure will help guard against disgruntled employees, innocent mistakes, improper information sharing and also regulates the administration of user rights and permissions," said Peter Tippett, Chairman and Chief Technologist at ICSA, Inc.
"By extending the focus of TruSecure, ICSA can enable corporations to address inside security issues in a logical and methodical way that will greatly enhance their security posture."
A recent survey conducted by Information Security (www.infosecuritymag.com) magazine indicates that while security has improved in the past year, breaches cost organizations an average of $256,000 during l998. The 745 total respondents to the 1999 Industry Survey also indicated that companies suffer employee access abuses more that any other type of security breach.

Grand fathers.(Reprint)
This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae
The 'biological clock' is a sensitive subject for many married couples.
With pressure of work and our modern world, quite often we don't get around to starting families until later in life than we might like.
There's no getting away from it. Women will often have to make a serious choice at some stage in their lives - whether or not to take time out of their careers to have a child.
But is Father Time an issue for prospective dads too?
It clearly isn't for some of the rich and famous anyway.
Rod Stewart didn't exactly 'Wear It Well' when he performed in the Emirates last year, looking very much an old timer.
But the 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?' singer certainly knows where he stands in the eyes of his wife. The 66-year-old is set
to become a father for the eighth time later this year.
While it's OK for many stars, some older males may worry about the prospect of bringing up a little one.
Music mogul Simon Cowell admitted as much recently when asked about the chances of becoming a dad now he is together with Mezhgan Hussainy. He said: "I worry about that because of my age. "When I was younger, my dad used to play soccer and games with me and I worry - I worry that if I was 70-"
Many older men might well feel a little nervous at the prospect of being outrun by junior AND a younger, fitter model if playing soccer at the beach a few years down the line.
But there are more important things to fatherhood, according to Doctor Muhammad Idrees of Medicentres International.
Dr Idrees says: "Most of the time, at least 99 per cent of the time, there are no issues with a man's age. The chance of conception might be less and there are very minute chances of some problems, like autism.
But young or old, it doesn't matter. Dads must be involved.
"The mother has just gone through a major event, childbirth, and she will most likely have to feed and give up her time to the child. Father must take responsibility. Her health really is most important than anything for the child. If she is healthy and happy then of course the child has a better chance of being strong.
There are less chances for getting all sorts of conditions and problems. The father is very important and he should be more than 50 per cent of responsibilities."
While age clearly has few issues for the celebrity dads like Stewart, Doctor Idrees believes we should ideally think about becoming fathers before we hit 40.
Dubai expat Tarquin Zaman has only just sneaked under the age barrier, but he will still be 40 when his little daughter Eliza turns one. He's recently turned over a new leaf with baby and wife Jess in mind. But being older has more positives than negatives as far as he's concerned.
"I might be older than I 'should be' according to everyone saying I should have started when I was 30.
But I think being older offers more in terms of stability. You may be a bit wiser, and there's no temptation to go out so much. I suppose I've got everything out of my system. "It's really motivated me. I've started at the gym and I want to live longer, obviously."
For many men, fatherhood can be a great watershed moment. And Doctor Idrees agrees that expecting a child is a great motivating factor for dads.
He says: "You must stay in shape or get in shape. You want to be there and see your child taking their first steps. You also want to be there when they are older and want to play with you. I always tell my patients who are smokers, 'now is
the perfect time to stop'. Think about your child and remember you need to look after yourself so your child can be given the maximum opportunities."
